Chapter Twelve

Nadia

Something changed. Milo’s wolf eyes blazed hot. The fog lifted from my head and I became keenly aware of every inch of my body. His arm was solid beneath me. I lay across Milo’s lap. Gently, he helped me up.

“How do you feel?” he asked.

A chill went through me. My fever had broken. I felt at first numb, then a flood of emotions went through me. I’d been wrong about everything. Grief slammed into my chest nearly taking my breath away all over again.

Milo moved. He had his hands on my arms.

“We need help,” he said. “There’s got to be a doctor. Someone who knows how to deal with your ... with …”

I put a hand up. “No,” I said. “It’s not what you think.”

“Nadia,” he said. “You got hit with something powerful. I felt it go through you.”

Just that. A simple sentence. And it changed everything.

Milo felt what I felt. I’d been drawing strength from him since the moment he first touched me. Now I knew what he’d done.

He’d tried to shield me from his conversation with his cousin and the men of Wolfguard. But I heard it all. He’d gone off-script. He’d turned his back on them. For me.

“It was Nicholas,” I said. The moment the words were out of my mouth, I became absolutely sure.

“What?”

“It wasn’t a booby trap like I laid for you back at the campsite,” I said. “I think it was a message. That was my brother’s magic. I’m sure of it.”

As I got my feet back under me, I began to sort out the fevered dreams I’d had. “He knew I’d come,” I said. “Nicholas counted on it. Milo, I was right about all of it. Nicholas found out something about the coven. I think they’ve been infiltrated by The Ring. I think that’s what my brother was trying to warn me about.”

My backpack leaned against the side of the tent. In it, I’d placed the locket containing my brother’s dried blood. I fished it out.

“Tell me what you’re going to do with that?” he asked.

I took a breath, knowing Milo was going to hate what I was about to say.

“I have to do what everyone’s accused me of. It’s the only way I’ll be able to see who spilled Nicholas’s blood.”

Milo clenched his jaw. “No,” he said. “It’s too dangerous.”

“It’s dangerous,” I admitted. “But not too dangerous. Not if ... if I take precautions.”

Milo searched my face. I sat down slowly, drawing my knees up in the corner of the tent. It was getting cold and dark outside. But in here, the heat was rising.

He came to me.

“What precautions?” he said.

“I was his anchor,” I said. “My brother. He used dark magic to set up that spell. They can’t track me with it. That was the whole point, I think. It’s why my entire coven hasn’t come down on our heads. Nicholas cast it to help hide me from them. He’s protecting me even now.”

Hot tears stung my eyes. So much wasted time.
